Absent (but still reading papers)

PhD Day: 23
Date: 4 March 2024

Due to the fact that I had an appointment in the Russian Embassy on that day, I had to take a day of absence. However, on the train to London I actually had a very productive time reading papers and actually understanding loads. Funny enough, our first destination in London was UCL’s Student House as I needed to print a couple of things. I always like telling a story about the Japanese garden – it was built to commemorate the link between Japan and UCL. Apparently, 160 years ago, five Japanese noblemen arrived London to study at UCL. Their journey changed Japanese society forever. Upon their return home, the so-called Chōshū Five went on to form the core of a new Japanese government, leading the nation’s transformation from an isolated state to one of the world’s foremost technological powers.
